He was born on 30 September 1970 in Catterick, North Yorkshire, and was raised in the Middle East, mainland Europe, and East Africa. His father was a fighter pilot of the RAF, and his mother an active participant in amateur theatre. He has done his studies from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, from where he began his initial career. He has done performances such as Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, and a production of Brand by Henrik Ibsen with Ralph Fiennes. 

In 2005, he stayed for 28 months in the National Theatre, acting in His Dark Materials, Henry IV with Sir Michael Gambon, and Playing With Fire by David Edgar, among other stage roles like the Earl of Wessex in the West End version of Shakespeare in Love in 2015. And as the lead role in Man in Mine at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2008.
