Animated Series “Garbage Pail Kids” Not Dead Yet According To David Gordon Green

The American animated series Garbage Pail Kids, developed by David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, and Josh Bycel, is still in development

“Right now, McBride is trying to do an animated series on the Garbage Pail Kids, if you ever had those cards. According to reports, Green mentioned on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that they are working on the series. He hinted at creative ways to make it an edgy animated show, though its future remains uncertain.”

Garbage Pail Kids is an animated series based on the card franchise of the same name. It was meant to be broadcast by CBS but it only saw one episode airing because of angry parent groups. Years later, it saw a DVD release instead, revealing 13 episodes.

The series focuses on the adventures of five kids: Terry Cloth, Clogged Duane, Patty Putty, Elliot Mess, and Split Kit. Occasionally, the series displayed the misadventures of other characters.

Garbage Pail Kids were banned in many schools during the height of the card’s popularity. One of the main reasons for the ban was that teachers cited them as distractions during class.

The series was the brainchild of cartoonist Art Spiegelman, then a consultant for Topps. He came up with the product idea after the success of his earlier creations Garbage Candy and Wacky Packages. The concept initially began as an unreleased Wacky Packages sticker for a 1985 series. However, the management at Topps thought it would be a good idea for a separate spin-off series.

The commercial success of the trading cards led to the production of a live-action movie, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, in 1987. An animated television series was produced in 1987, but its planned U.S. broadcast was delayed due to parental concerns.
