Ayushmann launches food truck for trans community

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana inaugurated a food truck for the transgender community in Zirakpur, Chandigarh. The initiative, named ‘Sweekar,’ uses the food truck to spread awareness and promote acceptance of the transgender community in society.

Ayushmann handed over the keys to Dhananjay Chauhan, the first transgender student at Panjab University and an active voice for the community in the state, on Thursday. He also took to social media and shared the pictures from the inauguration and wrote, “Jab hum ek dusre ko karenge ‘Sweekar’, tabhi toh hum kar payenge India ko aur behtar…I wish Mx Dhananjay Chauhan @DhananjayChau15 and members of the transgender community of Chandigarh good luck in their food venture! Onwards and upwards.”

The actor spoke to ANI about how important it is to make the transgender community feel accepted and empowered in society.

This Food Truck has been inaugurated for a very special reason to encourage and include the trans community in society. It’s a small step… more people who think about society and are sensitive towards it should come forward and help them. They (trans) are an invisible and underprivileged community in our country and this food truck is a kind of push to make them self-reliant and financially independent so that they can find a place in society.

Dhananjay Chauhan thanked Ayushmann for the initiative and expressed her gratitude. She said the community doesn’t ask anything from society but wants society to hear, see, and accept them. The actor has given them flight and encouraged them to spread their wings. Dhananjay asked for opportunities from society and said that most of them are well-educated and are in need of work. 

Audiences know Ayushmann Khurrana for choosing films that tackle socially relevant and taboo issues. The films spread awareness regarding such issues for the betterment of the country. Some of the examples are ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan,’ ‘Dream Girl,’ ‘Bala’ and more.
