Brazil Has Banned Telegram Due To Disinformation Issues

From the current updates, it has been found that the Brazilian Supreme Court has banned Telegram in the country. Along with the ban, they have also ordered Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel to implement the suspension in the 24 hours of the announcement. As per the information of Reuters and The New York Times, Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited the messaging app’s failure to respond to previous judicial orders to freeze accounts as spreading out the wrong information for his decision.

In Brazil, Telegram has now become the platform of choice for supporters of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. This is because some of the social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter started implementing stricter measures against the spread of fake news over the platform. Moraes, who’s also currently overseeing a number of investigations and a number of other things too, has ordered internet providers and phone carriers to block people’s access to Telegram within the country of Brazil. Probing further, The Supreme Court justice has ordered Google and Apple to remove this application from their stores. All of the companies will have to do it in the 5 days otherwise they will be fined around  $20,000 per day. Along with this, it has also been said that in case any of the people are found using VPNs or other means to access Telegram after it’s already been blocked will also face a $20,000 fine.
