Mumbai — In a dramatic turn of events, Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde has resigned amid mounting pressure following the arrest of his close aide, Walmik Karad, in connection with the brutal murder of a village sarpanch in Beed district. The resignation, confirmed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has sent shockwaves through the state’s political circles.
The case dates back to December 9, 2024, when Santosh Deshmukh, a village head (Sarpanch) from Beed, was abducted and later found murdered. Investigators revealed that Deshmukh was allegedly targeted for opposing an extortion attempt on an energy company operating in the region. His gruesome killing, documented in leaked videos and images that surfaced on social media, sparked public outrage.
The Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) filed a chargesheet detailing Karad’s involvement in the crime. With political pressure mounting and the opposition demanding swift action, Dhananjay Munde stepped down to contain the fallout.
With allegations of political-criminal nexus making headlines, the opposition, including the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), demanded accountability.
“This is not just an isolated incident—it exposes the deep-rooted criminal influences in Maharashtra’s governance,” said Congress leader Nana Patole.
Under fire, Munde, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a key figure in Maharashtra’s cabinet, announced his resignation. His decision was swiftly accepted by CM Devendra Fadnavis, who forwarded it to the Governor.
Dhananjay’s resignation has put the NCP in a difficult position, with party leaders attempting to distance themselves from the controversy.

Maharashtra has seen a disturbing trend of political controversies involving criminal elements. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state reported over 5,200 violent crimes, including 432 cases of abduction and murder, in 2024 alone.
Legal experts argue that this case should serve as a wake-up call, pushing for stricter background checks on politicians’ close aides and associates. With elections on the horizon, the incident raises critical questions about political integrity and governance in Maharashtra.
As the investigation continues, the resignation of a senior minister like Munde signals a rare instance of political accountability. However, whether this leads to genuine reforms or is merely a political maneuver remains to be seen.
For now, Maharashtra waits as the case unfolds, hoping for justice and a cleaner political future.
