Back in 2019 — right? — Google+ slipped off this earthly coil to the big app cemetery. That’s not entirely true. As a reminder, its cadaver has been resurrected as Google Currents, which is only available to paying G Suite subscribers. According to Ars Technica, Workspaces has now removed that programme as well, thereby ending Google’s social network or whatever it was.

Google claims that the release of the Spaces group chat app last year eliminated the necessity for Currents, therefore the service will be phased off beginning in 2023. However, it will first provide additional capabilities to Spaces in order to accommodate some of Currents’ social features. ” Support for broader communities and leadership communication, investments in sophisticated search, and content creation tools are among them.
Many users were likely confused about the use and purpose of Currents, much as they were about it. Unfortunately, this problem also affects Spaces. Spaces is an extension of Rooms, but it’s a portion of Google Chat that’s built for group chat, similar to Slack, as Google defined it last year. Is that clear?
What’s especially amusing is that it recycled both the Spaces and Currents names: Currents was a news-style app that existed until 2013, while Google Spaces was a messaging app that we briefly saw in 2016. As a result, it has been essentially destroyed twice, and Currents has been buried twice. Let’s just hope we don’t hear their names again.
