The global box office has gone mad this weekend with the continued record-breaking of Avatar: The Way of Water, a blockbuster comeback of Badshah of Indian cinema Shah Rukh Khan and The Wandering Earth sequel collecting huge amid the popularity of Avatar 2.
Avatar: The Way of Water has already become the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time by Friday. James Cameron’s directorial sci-fi action adventure touched the $2.117B mark on Sunday. Avatar 2 has become the fourth biggest movie globally and might knock down James Cameron’s own directorial Titanic in the coming few days and become the number three. Although, Titanic is going to be re-released on Valentine’s Day.
Avatar 2 collected $1.496B at the international box office with $42.4M in the seventh week from 52 markets, a 28% drop compared to the last session. Avatar 2 is behind Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Titanic. Among the top 3, two are directed by James Cameron. The sequel has grossed $237.1M in China and witnessed a 46% drop after the Chinese New Year season. In France, the franchise has become the highest-grossing of all time with a gross collection of $137M.
The blockbuster franchise grossed $124.4M in Germany, $103.3M in Korea, and $85.7M in the UK. The movie collected $239M via IMAX surpassing Avatar.
Coming to China, IMAX also witnessed its best-ever festival collection with $34M, a jump of 3% by 2021 and 54% by 2022. The Wandering Earth 2 grossed $26.1M and became the third biggest release on IMAX of all time during the Chinese New Year season. This is also the first time that IMAX grossed over $25M when a Chinese and a Hollywood movie were running at the same time.
By Sunday, The Wandering Earth 2 grossed $377M. Other films that are doing well in the Chinese market are Full River Red with a gross collection of $466M and Guardian Code with a collection of $136.3M.
Turning to India, Shah Rukh Khan returned with an action-packed Pathaan which is doing well domestically and internationally. The Hindi title has grossed $52.6M globally.
Push In Boots: The Last Wish stands at a global collection of $334.1M. Babylon collected $26.4M, and M3GAN collected $146M globally.
