He was born on 3 August 1984 in Telangana. His father, K.B. Chhetri, was an officer in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers of the Indian Army and also played in the army football team; his mother, Sushila Chhetri, and her twin sister were also representatives of the national team of Nepal. Brought up in constant transfer of army posts, he spent most of his childhood life in Darjeeling, studying in schools such as Bethany School, and subsequently Bahai School in Gangtok, Sikkim. His talent in football was evident through his performances in local tournaments.
At the age of 16, he was taken by the U19 Indian team as part of the Asian School Championships in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. He became the top scorer twice. He represented Delhi City Football Club, and his performance in the Durand Cup earned him a three-year contract with Mohun Bagan in 2002 at the age of 17, which became his career debut.
It has been estimated that he has a net worth of around Rs. 11 crores. He earns his salary from the endorsements and his football career.
He has been in a relationship with Sonam Bhattacharya for around 13 years and has had a great time together. Both of them have been there for one another and have continued with a good relationship. Sunil Chhetri has officially ended his international career following India’s exit from the final round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. After his recent 14-goal domestic spurt, Chhetri indicated that his next professional goal could be his swansong at 42 with Bengaluru FC as a 15-goal goalkeeper and champion of the table. A successor to striker is now an urgent requirement in India because none of the dependable goal-scorers can replace him in the role of the all-time best scorer of Blue Tigers, with 95 goals in 157 appearances.
Additionally, Chhetri reached his 90th goal with a hat-trick against Pakistan in the 2023 SAFF Championship, overtaking Malaysia’s Mokhtar Dahari, and has scored most frequently against Nepal and the Maldives.
