Muhammad was born in Hathazari in Bengal and in a Bengali Muslim family. He spent his early childhood in a village, but afterwards his family shifted to Chittagong. He has done his graduation at Dhaka University in economics. In 1962 completed his MA, and in the same year, Yunus was appointed as a lecturer at Chittagong College. With economics, he has earned a PhD. Returning as Chittagong University’s economics head in 1972 amid the 1974 food shortage that sparked his microcredit focus. After this, his journey started.
Throughout his career, he has achieved a good wealth and a respectable image among the people. In 2006, Yunus achieved the Nobel Peace Prize for the foundation of microcredit to fight poverty. His achievements also include the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
