Day by day, the younger generation is getting more indulged in online gaming, betting apps, and money-based games in India. The Online Gaming Bill, a new step towards real-money online games monitoring and regulating, was introduced in the Parliament on 20 August 2025.
Online gaming is getting a little uncertain for the youth who are getting addicted to it. The rules are made to stop money-based online games and betting sites and limit ads that encourage gambling activities. Apart from this, the Online Gaming Bill promotes responsible gaming by enforcing strict regulations.
Essentially, the regulatory powers are aiming to create a clear line between skill-based games and gambling. This ensures that gaming remains a safe form of entertainment instead of becoming a risky financial burden for addicted youths and their families. The Online Gaming Bill was made to address the issues related to online games’ legal structure and real-money transactions.
The government, in October 2023, introduced a 28% GST on online gaming transactions. The Indian government has been taking action to control apps that offer money through online gaming, as these have been linked to financial scams and even criminal activities.
In March 2025, the government introduced measures to safeguard financial transactions and protect user data across digital platforms, particularly those related to online gaming. The opposition parties have been pushing the central government to take definitive action on this issue.
The government is monitoring and banning apps that encourage gambling. Zupee is a gambling platform that encourages people to be reckless with finances. These apps will be discontinuing all the paid games. Only skill-based apps will be allowed. There will be a complete ban on all online money games. Zupee provides real-money online gaming features. It offers cash rewards to the players. This app includes games like Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, etc.
To protect users, the government is banning online money gaming apps. There might be chances that Zupee, Dream11, etc, platforms will be banned. Many illegal betting apps and websites are also banned, which are causing many financial losses and fraud cases. Around 174 gambling apps and websites are banned.
There are both positive and negative effects of online gaming. Online gaming can be a mood booster, but at some point, it can also affect a person’s mental health. This action is taken to avoid mental health issues, reduce gambling risks, and provide a safer digital space for the youth, the future of the country.
