Shehbaz Sharif secured his second term as Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Sunday; he secured 201 votes in parliament amidst protests. Along with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, his party, the PML-N, will form a coalition government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Pakistan Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party on Tuesday. The leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Sharif, supported party loyalist Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for speaker of the national house and his younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, for prime minister.

“As part of the agreement forming the PML-N-PPP alliance, the PML-N appointed Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of Nawaz Sharif, as the chief minister of Punjab province. On February 26, Maryam, Nawaz’s political heir, took the oath of office and became the nation’s first female chief minister of any province. According to the other agreement, the PPP appointed Asif Ali Zardari, the former president of Pakistan, as its senior leader, and he would hold the presidency.

Sharif’s party, the Nawaz PML-N, came in second in the February 8 elections. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, backed independent candidates who won the most seats but were unable to secure a majority in parliament.
