Indian industrial tycoon and philanthropist started his career in 1967 as an engineer at Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering, Pune. A few years later, he left his job and started MicroComp under the brand ‘Telvista’ in partnership with Ajai Chowdhry and other colleagues. In 1976 they founded HCL Tech together. Nadar attended multiple schools for his studies. He went to Town Higher Secondary School in Kumbakonam, then Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School in Madurai. For high school, he joined St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School in Trichy. Shiv Nadar got his pre-university degree from The American College, Madurai, and an electrical and electronics engineering degree from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.
He handed over the position of Chairman of HCL to his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra in July 2021. C Vijay Kumar has taken over as the company’s new CEO and MD.
His friends and colleagues call him ‘Magus’, which means wizard in ancient Persian. He is the founder and current chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation. In the name of his father Sivasubramaniya Nadar, in 1996 he founded SSN College of Engineering in Chennai.

Shiv Nadar Foundation
Shiv Nadar wanted to focus on philanthropy and founded Shiv Nadar Foundation in 1994. The motive of the foundation was to provide quality education to the future generation. In 1996, he founded the SSN College of Engineering in the name of his father. Over a period, multiple branches were opened inside the college campus and the name of the college was changed to SSN Institute.
He gifted Rs. 1 million worth of HCL shares to the Institute. In 2008, the Shiv Nadar foundation opened two Vidyagyan Schools in Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with SHIKSHA Foundation. They offered scholarships to over 200 students of Uttar Pradesh. In February 2011, Shiv Nadar donated his old school, Town Higher Secondary School, computer equipment worth Rs 80 lakh.
