Sudha Murty Nominated to Rajya Sabha by PM Modi

President Draupadi Murmu nominated author and philanthropist Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha on Friday. PM Narendra Modi congratulated Ms. Murty, saying her presence in the Rajya Sabha reflects the country’s ‘Nari Shakti.’ The announcement came on International Women’s Day.

While congratulating Sudha Murty on her Rajya Sabha nomination, PM Modi wrote on X, ‘Delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education, have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,”

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, nominated 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament for their contributions towards arts, literature, sciences, and social services. 

Sudha Murty told the media that she is grateful for the opportunity, and she said, “It came on Women’s Day, and that’s a double surprise. I am very happy. I am grateful to our prime minister.” Murty had no idea why she was nominated to the Upper House of Parliament, but she is determined to perform well and do her best for the poor.

The creator of the massive IT company Infosys is Ms. Murty’s spouse, Narayana Murthy. Sudha Murty is the mother-in-law of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “The government awarded her the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, for her social work last year.

Ms Murty, who is well-known for her straightforwardness and simplicity, started as an engineer at TELCO (now Tata Motors). She presently serves as the Infosys Foundation’s chair. She writes extensively in both Kannada and English, and publishers translate all her work into major Indian languages.
