UK Skilled Immigration Update: Senior or Specialist Worker Visa 2025

The UK government’s 2025 immigration rules changes have reformed the skilled immigration pathway for foreign professionals and sponsoring businesses. The Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is a part of the UK’s Global Business Mobility (GBM) route. While it is not significantly affected by the recent and proposed changes to UK immigration policies, companies and applicants must be updated when seeking a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa to avoid delays or refusals. With new UK worker visa requirements introduced this year, as a foreign national, you must understand the eligibility criteria for the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa and your chances of meeting them.

If you’re navigating skilled immigration or planning an intra-company transfer, understanding the visa’s position under the new UK worker visa rules is more critical than ever. This guide explains the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa, the new UK worker visa rules, and other relevant information about the visa.

What Is a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa?

The Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is a part of the Global Business Mobility (GBM) route, designed by the Home Office to streamline and expedite the skilled immigration process for professionals in their respective industries. This visa allows foreign companies to transfer employees to their UK branch to fill specialist or senior roles. The UK Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is designed for short-term assignments lasting up to 5 years. Unlike the UK Skilled Worker Visa, which aims to attract new employees to the UK labour market, the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is intended for individuals who are currently employed by a company overseas.

Moreover, you are exempt from meeting English language proficiency standards if you are an employee of a company looking to join your UK-based employer on a Senior or Specialist Visa. While the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa UK does not directly lead to permanent residency in the UK, you can switch to a Skilled Worker Visa, allowing you to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) to remain in the UK for the foreseeable future after 5 years of holding the Skilled Worker Visa.

New UK Worker Visa Rules

The UK visa changes 2025 have reformed skilled immigration, removing about 111 occupations previously eligible at lower skill levels (Regulated Qualifications Framework [RQF] levels 3 to 5). As a result, employers will have limited access to roles below degree level (RQF level 6) through a new targeted Temporary Shortage Occupation List (TSOL), set to replace the Immigration Salary List (ISL), which will require workforce strategies focused on domestic hiring.

The salary requirement to obtain a UK Skilled Worker Visa also increased from £38,700 to £41,700 per year, effective from July 22, 2025. This means that those seeking to obtain this visa must have an annual salary of £41,700 or the “going rate” for their position, whichever is higher. You’re required to earn up to £52,500 to apply for a Senior or Specialist Worker Visa. Moreover, the changes to the situation surrounding Senior or Specialist Worker Visas require companies to demonstrate a stronger business case for transferring workers to their UK branches for temporary assignments.

Is the Specialist Worker Visa Still Applicable for Skilled Workers in 2025?

The Senior or Specialist Worker Visa remains part of the Global Business Mobility route, enabling multinational companies to undertake temporary assignments. As such, the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa remains valid in 2025 for skilled workers. However, businesses and employees must meet the revised UK worker visa requirements to stay eligible for the visa.

Eligibility and Validity of the UK Senior Worker Visa Post‑2025 Visa Changes

The eligibility criteria for the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa after the 2025 visa changes include the following:

  • Age: Be 18 years or older.
  • Sponsorship: Be sponsored by a UK employer who has received Home Office approval.
  • Genuine roles: You must receive an authentic job offer, not to obtain a visa to the UK.
  • Job link: Hold a position that requires you to work for a UK-based company that is affiliated with your foreign employer through a joint venture, common ownership, or control.
  • Overseas work experience: Unless you make £73,900 or more, you must have worked for your employer outside the UK for at least 1 year.
  • Immigration Skills Charge: Your sponsor must have paid the Immigration Skills Charge.
  • Skill level: Your job must be at the required Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 6.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) certificate: You may be required to provide a TB test certificate.

With the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa, you can stay in the UK for up to 5 years in any 6 years if you receive an annual salary of less than £73,900. If you receive a yearly salary of up to £73,900 or more, you can stay in the UK for up to 9 years in any 10 years.

Hiring with Senior or Specialist Worker Visas After 2025 Changes

The UK worker visa changes in 2025 include more scrutiny and compliance responsibilities for employers when hiring employees. As such, sponsors must:

  • Justify the necessity of foreign transfers over local recruitment.
  • Reassess existing roles for compliance.
  • Maintain up-to-date sponsor records.

Conclusion

The UK has tightened its approach to skilled immigration, but the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa remains a reliable pathway for global mobility. Although the UK immigration rules are stricter, the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa still enables companies to bring in essential talent to the United Kingdom. It allows skilled professionals to contribute to UK projects. The success of your application now depends on meeting the specific criteria and demonstrating the value of each employee’s transfer to the UK company for temporary assignments. This visa is a pathway to one of the world’s most competitive markets for those who meet the qualifications. With professional guidance from an immigration lawyer, you can submit a comprehensive Senior or Specialist Worker Visa application with a higher chance of success.
