There are four basic operations in Mathematics. The four basic mathematical operations are – division, multiplication, addition & division. In layman’s terms, the operation division is defined as breaking or splitting a number into many small equal parts. Consider things from our daily lives, such as pieces of domino’s pizza or any bar of Cadbury chocolate, to introduce division. For example, dividing a pizza into five slices is a division. As a result, 1/5 = 0.2. This indicates that each slice of this Domino’s pizza is 0.2 times the entire pizza size. Let’s go through this subject in further depth.
In this article, we are going to know-how division and multiplication is performed.
What is Multiplication?
Do you know when you have to add the same number repetitively? Isn’t it a very tedious process? Well, it becomes very easy when you get a shortcut. Multiplication is defined as a mathematical operation that basically follows the concept of the repeated addition of one constant number. In multiplication, the numbers that need to be multiplied are known as factors in mathematics and the result which is obtained after performing the operation is known as the product of the given numbers. The operation is used to simplify the process of repeating the addition operation.
Example: Let’s suppose there are six boxes of chocolates and each box has nine candies. Now when you need to find the total number of candies inside the box of chocolates.
Solution: This given example can be solved using the method of addition, that is finding the sum. That is, 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 54 candies. In other words, when we have greater numbers to work with, multiplication comes in handy. We can solve this question by adding these, but it will take longer to acquire the solution. In other words, when we have greater numbers to work with, multiplication comes in handy.
Let us now answer this problem using multiplication. The number of boxes will be multiplied by the number of candies in each of the given boxes. We can calculate the total number of candies by multiplying 6* 9 by 54, which is 6 multiplied by 9 which is 54 candies together. As a consequence, we can observe that we achieve the same outcome in a shorter amount of time. This is why the operation of multiplication is also known as repeated addition.
Multiplication – Symbol
When we look at the multiplication expression (7*9 = 63), we can see that the symbol (×) joins the two integers and completes the supplied statement. In addition to the cross symbol (*), multiplication is represented by the mid-line dot operator (.) and the asterisk sign (*).
Division – Symbol
The symbol for the operation of division is / or . There are let’s say 12 sweets which Ram has and he needs to share with his friends. There are total 4 friends that Ram has. How many number of sweets will each one of friends will get?
Solution: First let’s note down the information given in the example.
Number of sweets Ram has = 12 sweets
The number of friends Ram has = 4 friends
We need to divide the sweets among 4 friends, so need to divide 12/4 = 3
Therefore, the total number of sweets each friend will get is 3.
We have discussed the basics of both multiplication as well as division. Going through the examples mentioned in the article above, it becomes easy to understand the concept and importance of the operations.
