Muhammad was born in Hathazari in Bengal and in a Bengali Muslim family. He spent his early childhood in a village, but afterwards his family shifted to Chittagong. He has done his graduation at Dhaka University in economics. In 1962 completed his MA, and in the same year, Yunus was appointed as a lecturer at Chittagong College.
