Allahabad HC Rejects Bail Plea of UP MLA Abbas Ansari

On Monday, 22 January 2024, the Allahabad High Court rejected the bail plea of Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari in an arms license case. He is the son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari.

The Lucknow bench of the High Court claimed in its order that authorities recovered a large number of banned metal cartridges from Abbas Ansari.

Justice Subhas Vidyarthi highlighted the seriousness of the case, noting that Abbas Ansari, a public figure, committed this act.

Submitted on behalf of Abbas Ansari, an MLA of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party, Abbas Ansari as a shooter. Further on, he said that he had a valid arms license and he could keep three harms and had no illegality in it.

The order also noted that Delhi Police coordinated with Uttar Pradesh Police to transfer Abbas Ansari’s gun license. Hence, it is not fair to say that he hid the information.

Contrary to the plea, the state counsel claimed that authorities recovered over 8 firearms and 4,000 cartridges from Abbas Ansari. In this matter, authorities lodged an FIR against him in 2019.

In the FIR, the accused Abbas Ansari, after obtaining a gun license in Lucknow, purchased guns. Following this, he transferred his license to Delhi and purchased guns based on the changed address.

The High Court noted in its order that although Abbas Ansari’s license, issued in Lucknow, became invalid on October 1, 2015, he used it to obtain a new one in New Delhi on June 1, 2017, and purchased seven firearms. Authorities filed a chargesheet in the case on December 24, 2020.

Talking about Abbas Ansari’s political stint, he won the 2022 assembly polls on the ticket of SBSP, Which was at that time an alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
