Election Commission to Remove DGP, 6 Officials

The Election Commission of India ordered the removal of top officials from several states, including the West Bengal director general of police and the home secretaries of 6 states.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will remove West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar. Election Commission has also issued removal orders for the home secretaries in six states: Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The ECI, headed by CEC Rajiv Kumar, issued decisions that resulted in the removal of Brihanmumbai’s municipal commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, as well as several commissioners and deputy commissioners. Additionally, those dismissed were secretaries from Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh’s general administrative departments.

According to PTI reports, the commission has asked all state governments to remove officers from election-related duties if they have served for three years or are posted in their hometown.

Maharashtra had disregarded the directives regarding several deputy municipal commissioners and a few municipal commissioners. 

The commission expressed dissatisfaction with the state chief secretary and instructed the transfer of BMC officials, along with the additional and deputy commissioners, with a deadline report by 6 p.m. on Monday.

The commission also instructed the chief secretary to transfer all municipal commissioners in similar roles, along with additional and deputy municipal commissioners, to other corporations in Maharashtra.

The Election Commission has requested the names of three officials by 5 p.m. To choose a new DGP for West Bengal

The West Bengal government appointed Rajeev Kumar, a senior IPS officer close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, as the state DGP in December.
