Nadar attended multiple schools for his studies. He went to Town Higher Secondary School in Kumbakonam, then Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School in Madurai. For high school, he joined St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School in Trichy. Shiv Nadar got his pre-university degree from The American College, Madurai, and an electrical and electronics engineering degree from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

He handed over the position of Chairman of HCL to his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra in July 2021. C Vijay Kumar has been the CEO and MD of HCL Technologies since 2016.

His friends and colleagues call him ‘Magus’, which means wizard in ancient Persian. He is the founder and current chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation. In the name of his father Sivasubramaniya Nadar, in 1996 he founded SSN College of Engineering in Chennai.

They offered scholarships to over 200 students of Uttar Pradesh. In February 2011, Shiv Nadar donated his old school, Town Higher Secondary School, computer equipment worth Rs 80 lakh.
