The Election Commission of India issued an advisory to all state and UT chief electoral officers (CEOs) on the prevention of heatwave impacts before and during the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

The order stated that it is predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department that there is a probability of stronger and longer spells of heatwaves this summer, especially from March to June 2024.

Considering the above predictions, a list of do’s and don’ts has been issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to reduce the impact of the heatwave.

The commission directs the CEOs/DEOs to make a complete gap analysis of AMF at each Polling Station and work with State authorities to provide these AMFs at the polling stations permanently. It also provides facilities for voters to cast their votes conveniently. The AMF includes the Sector Officers to visit polling stations/locations to assess their worth,

the letter stated
  • The ECI mandates the compliance of assured minimum facilities (AMF) and other facilities that are to be provided at the polling stations.
  • The commission also mandates that the polling stations be located on the ground floor only so that the elderly and disabled can also vote without any difficulty.
  • There should be adequate drinking water, furniture, electricity arrangements and toilet facilities for the public to ensure hassle-free voting at the polling stations.
  • It is to be ensured that there are proper arrangements of shade, a creche for the children, and a voter assistance booth available at the polling stations.
  • Medical kits containing medicines, masks, and bandages, along with Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS), should be available, keeping the heat in mind.

General elections will take place from April 19 to June 1, 2024, for the 18th Lok Sabha elections and will be conducted in seven phases. The announcement of the results will take place on June 4, 2024.
