Jailed gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari dies of cardiac arrest. Doctors admitted Ansari to Rani Durgavati Medical College in the Banda district on Thursday. He served as a five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau and had been in jail since 2005.

Mukhtar Ansari was 63 years old and lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda jail. He was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state after a complaint of vomiting. As per the reports, a team of nine doctors consulted him, but he died of cardiac arrest.

The Uttar Pradesh government imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and increased security in the Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts.

Doctors admitted Ansari to the hospital on March 26 and discharged him after 14 hours. They diagnosed him with a urinary tract infection after he complained of abdominal pain. The doctors advised him to undergo surgery. Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari claimed that jail officials gave his brother poisonous substances.

Afzal Ansari further stated that Mukhtar was given poison around 40 days ago as well, and recently, on March 19 and March 22, he was again poisoned, due to which his health was deteriorating.

The authorities ordered a magisterial probe into Mukhtar Ansari’s death after his family claimed jail officials poisoned him. The hospital will hand over the gangster-turned-politician’s body to the family for the last rites after the postmortem. His funeral will take place in Kali Bagh Graveyard, Ghazipur.

Mukhtar Ansari had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. Officials kept him in a Punjab prison for two years before transferring him to Banda jail in April 2021. The Uttar Pradesh Police included Ansari on a list of 66 gangsters. He had been behind bars since September 2022 for committing crimes in eight cases before different courts in UP.
